AN EVALUATION OF LEAN MANAGEMENT PRACTICES AND THEIR INFLUENCE ON OPERATIONAL PERFORMANCE: INSIGHTS FROM GLOBAL LITERATURE AND IMPLICATIONS FOR SAUDI MANUFACTURING

Abstract

Introduction Originating from the Toyota Production System, Lean Management focuses on the elimination of waste and value addition to enhance operational performance in manufacturing. In Saudi Arabia, with its Vision 2030, Lean practices aim to boost GDP contribution and productivity. It, however, faces unique cultural and organizational challenges like high power distance and uncertainty avoidance. Purpose This study evaluates the influence of Lean Management practices on operational performance in Saudi manufacturing. It identifies barriers, the extent of implementation and improvements in the KPI recorded for each tool. Its objectives include analyzing barriers, evaluating implementation depth and associating tools (5S, Kaizen, JIT) with KPIs. Research questions address organizational/cultural barriers, implementation patterns, and KPI enhancements. Methodology A systematic literature review following PRISMA-ScR guidelines synthesized 42 peer-reviewed studies (2000–2025) from Google Scholar. Inclusion criteria targeted empirical research on Lean tools in Saudi/Middle Eastern manufacturing. Data extraction and thematic synthesis examined adoption, barriers and outcomes. Results Lean awareness is high (77%), but implementation is low (22%). Key barriers include leadership disengagement, hierarchical structures and cultural factors. 5S achieved 30-40% cycle time reductions; Kaizen yielded 40-50% defect decreases; and JIT reduced inventory costs by 30-45%. In all cases, outcomes matched global benchmarks when adapted. Implications Theoretically, culture moderates rather than blocks Lean success. This advances adaptation frameworks. Practically, Saudi firms should prioritize culturally compatible tools and leadership should commit to support Vision 2030 diversification. Future research needs longitudinal studies to better understand adaptation mechanisms.
