Evaluation of the ultrasound accuracy in the detection and diagnosis of ovarian torsion in adult females: A structured literature review.

Abstract

The fifth most frequent gynaecological emergency is ovarian torsion (OT), with prevalence at 2.7 to 3%. The ovarian torsion is described as a partial or complete rotation of the ovarian vascular pedicle and typically includes the fallopian tube and the ovary. Diagnosis, however, presents a hard challenge given that the medical appearance of OT is complex and occasionally inaccurate. Precise diagnosis may maintain the viability of the ovaries while untreated or misdiagnosed ovarian torsion may cause infertility and loss of ovaries.
