Abstract

This study examines the optimisation of staff roster within the logistic operations room store using a constraint-based mathematical programming model. The main objective was to develop and solve a mixed-integer programming (MIP) model of operational, contractual, and employee preference constraints that is fair, effective, and legally compliant. The research critically examined the available scheduling models, noting that they lacked in their capacity to deal with complexities among the workforce. Simulated data concerning roles, preferences, and contractual rules were used to implement and validate the model utilising Excel Solver

Description

Different sectors like logistics, healthcare, retail and so on require efficient staff scheduling for better performance and employee satisfaction. The complexity of workforce scheduling in operations room stores becomes very high due to the requirement of accurate and continuous coordination. Round-the-clock staffing, fulfilling diverse roles, and responding quickly to changing conditions are often required. Using old manual systems or rules to develop staff schedules does not use the most efficient way to apply the many constraints in these environments that have multiple layers, resulting in underperformance of the environment and dissatisfaction of the workforce.
