Abstract
This research explores how digital technologies influence visitor engagement in museums and heritage sites across the United Kingdom. Over recent years, tools such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mobile applications, and wearable devices have transformed traditional museum experiences, making them more interactive and immersive. Despite this trend, there is limited understanding of how these technologies truly affect visitors’ learning, interest, and overall engagement.
Focusing on the British Museum and Virtual Vauxhall Gardens, this study examines the types of digital technologies in use, how they enhance visitor experiences, and the challenges faced in their implementation. The research highlights the ways in which digital tools encourage active participation, improve access to cultural knowledge, and make visits more engaging. The findings provide valuable insights for museum professionals, policymakers, and researchers, offering guidance on best practices and future investments in digital innovation. Furthermore, the study identifies gaps in current knowledge and suggests directions for future research, both in the UK and internationally.
