Elston, JulianAlsaedi, Qamar2024-12-302024-08-11https://hdl.handle.net/20.500.14154/74519Background: Tobacco smoking among adolescents is a critical public health concern due to its high prevalence and associated adverse health effects. Early initiation of smoking is linked to severe long-term health issues and increased risk of addiction. Aims and Objectives: This scoping review aims to explore and map the available literature on the predictors of smoking among adolescents. The study seeks to identify potential predictors, underexplored areas, and gaps in the current research to inform the development of targeted smoking prevention policies and programs. Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted using databases such as Google Scholar, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Wiley Online Library, ScienceDirect, and Scopus. The review followed the PRISMA-ScR guidelines and utilised the Population, Concept, and Context (PCC) framework for eligibility criteria. Both quantitative and qualitative studies published in English in the last 10 years were included. Results: 14 studies were included in the final review. Key predictors of smoking initiation among adolescents include social influences (peers and parents), psychological factors (low self-esteem, high Impulsivity and a propensity for risk-taking, Hopelessness, depression, and elevated stress), low socioeconomic status, media and advertising. The complex interplay between these factors highlights the need for multifaceted intervention strategies. Conclusions: Understanding the predictors of smoking initiation among adolescents is crucial for developing effective prevention programs. Addressing social influences, providing psychological support, and implementing strict regulations on media and advertising can significantly reduce smoking initiation rates among adolescents. Future research should focus on filling those gaps to enhance the comprehensiveness of smoking prevention strategies.50enAdolescent Smoking Smoking Initiation Predictors of Smoking Social Influence Peer Pressure Parental Supervision Psychological Factors Stress and Smoking Low Self-Esteem Risk-Taking Behavior Socioeconomic Status (SES) Tobacco Advertising Smoking Prevention Anti-Smoking Campaigns Mental Health and Smoking Youth Tobacco UseWhat are the predictors of the uptake of smoking among adolescents – a scoping reviewThesis
