(2023). “why didn’t she just leave?” An investigation into the standpoint of People on Twitter about the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard trial in 2022.https://hdl.handle.net/20.500.14154/67980The dissertation has discussed the general standpoints of Twitter users towards the recent trial of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard which took place in the year of 2022. Two main questions were addressed in this paper. The first one is: How is judgment and support expressed by Twitter users under the two hashtags #justiceforjohnnydepp and #justiceforamberheard? And the second one is: How are people expressing relation and opposition to the movement of #MeToo and Amber Heard through user-to-user interactions?Since Twitter has been widely used by billions of people, it is suitable for research and is a favorable platform that I personally use on a daily basis. The recent trial of the famous actor Johnny Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard had set a wide debate on social media and other newspapers. The trial is set to be for 6 weeks ending on the 12th of May. The case is concerning whether Johnny had really abused Amber or the other way around. The research will be discussing linguistic indications of users’ standpoints on Twitter under different hashtags #JusticeForJohnnyDepp and #JusticeForAmberHeard that support each party. And see how abuse is hardly looked at from a man’s point of view by looking at a large number of tweets and seeing what linguistic representations are being used. The research will also be discussing themes that characterize these tweets and look at the linguistic features that show the standpoint of Twitter users.54enTwitterRepresentationsStandpointsTrialsJohnny DeppAmber Heard“why didn’t she just leave?” An investigation into the standpoint of people on Twitter about the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard trial in 2022.Thesis
