Synchronize and Integrate an Optimum Photovoltaic System with a Distribution Network
Abstract
The integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in medium and low voltage distribution networks has been increasing over the last years such as the Grid-Connected Photovoltaic system (GCPV) which considered as one of the most promising technology. There are several benefits to both producers and consumers. For example, PV system can meet the end user’s demand and reduce electricity bills, while sending any excess power into the grid and if there any shortage power can use the utility grid as a backup. However, there are many challenges to design an optimum PV system and to keep the system reliable and stable especially at a high penetration level. One of the potential issues is the possibility of the voltage to exceed the statutory limits due to reverse power flow. This project will design a Grid-connected PV system to be installed in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia by using PVsyst software and implement it in MATLAB/Simulink software to study the impact on the voltage quality in three different scenarios, 20%, 50%, and 100% penetration level.
