Item Restricted Critical Discourse Analysis in the Arab World: A critical review(Bangor University, 2023) Asiri, Tahani Mohammed; Tenbrink, ThoraStudies in the field of critical discourse analysis have shown breadth in the methods of analysis of critical discourse (Wodak, Mayer 2016). The aim of this study was to find out how Arabs perceive the concept of critical discourse analysis. This study also intended to identify the extent to which CDA has been applied to Arab discourse and the degree to which its application aligns with the approaches of its founders. The current study also targeted to introduce English scholars and readers to Arab efforts in Arab critical discourse analysis, thereby contributing to the enrichment and development of this field of study. The current research used a qualitative approach to analyze and interpret texts in order to learn the methodologies used and added by Arab researchers. Analysis and monitoring were the most appropriate methodologies for the type of study such as critical review. The studies discussed in this paper have been divided into two groups: research written in Arabic that applied CDA to Arabic discourse, and research written in English that applied CDA to Arabic discourse with the goal of establishing the difference in the application of methodologies. The findings revealed that English research that applied CDA to Arabic discourse only committed to applying the proposed methodologies while Arab studies applied the proposed methodologies and added other methodologies stemming from the nature of Arab culture and language. Since each language has its own characteristics, which cannot be applied to other languages, what is considered an advantage in one language is a criterion of weakness in another language. The study also revealed a lack of studies in the field of analysis of critical discourse in Arab culture stemming from the nature of Arab political society and Arab linguistic specificities18 0Item Restricted CONTEXTUALIZING TIKTOK CONTROVERSIES: CRITICAL DISCOURSE ANALYSIS OF PLATFORM PRIVACY DEBATES(University of Central Florida, 2024) Alharazi, Bshaer; Salter, AnastasiaThis study focuses on online news coverage of TikTok's privacy policies to uncover accusations related to security threats between October 2020 and May 2023. Using critical discourse analysis, the research compares TikTok's discourse with other platforms like Facebook and YouTube, highlighting the role of governments, tech companies, and users in shaping this discourse. Furthermore, it demonstrates how cultural and political factors influence privacy discussions, particularly regarding the controversies, discussions, and accusations between the United States and China. AI tool ChatGPT analyzes the discourse by focusing on the news texts' most prominent topics and keywords. The goal is to identify key themes for each highlighted keyword to answer the following questions: (1) How does TikTok's privacy policy construct notions of privacy and security? (2) How do shareholders discuss potential risks in TikTok’s privacy policies? (3) What are the risks of privacy violations and TikTok's global implications? This research asserts that when analyzed alongside the privacy policy discourses of other major social media platforms, TikTok's privacy policies reveal significant implications for cybersecurity, particularly in the context of informed consent. The findings highlight the interplay of cultural, political, and economic factors, emphasizing the urgent need for continuous monitoring and accountability in digital privacy-seeking risk assessment and minimizing.50 0Item Restricted .Critical Discourse Analysis in the Arab World: A critical review(Bangor University, 2023) Asiri, Tahani Mohammed; Tenbrink, ThoraStudies in the field of critical discourse analysis have shown breadth in the methods of analysis of critical discourse (Wodak, Mayer 2016). It aims to examine the experiences, roles, and positions of teachers, considering the influence of organisational structures and institutional discourses on the development of their professional identity and agency. Additionally, the study investigates the roles and experiences of administrators in their shared responsibilities with teachers. Methodologically, this research adopts an institutional ethnographic approach, utilising qualitative data collected from two sources: 1) policy documents obtained from the institute, and 2) semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions conducted with teachers and administrators. The analysis of the institutional documents employs Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), allowing for the identification of power dynamics and ideological underpinnings embedded within institutional texts. Thematic analysis is employed to code and analyse the data gathered from interviews and focus group discussions. Specifically, the study draws upon Foucault's concepts of power-knowledge, Fairclough’s ideas of CDA and Bandura’s social cognitive theory to comprehend the interplay between power and knowledge within the institutional context. The findings of the study reveal that despite the institute’s vision for excellence and quality in English language teaching, there seems to be limited attention given to addressing the professional needs of teachers. The persistent and intricate top-down organisational structure significantly restricts teachers’ exercise of agency and hinders their capacity to express their professional identities. This study offers significant insights for teaching practice, professional learning, and policy reforms, particularly in terms of acknowledging teachers’ voices and enhancing their agency within hierarchical structures and beyond. By recognising and amplifying the perspectives of both teachers and administrators in their shared professional environment, it is possible to improve teaching practices, provide more effective professional learning opportunities, and advocate for policy changes that better support the growth and overall well-being of both teachers and administrators.24 0Item Restricted EMERGING SOCIO-CULTURAL IDENTITIES IN SAUDI ARABIA: A TRIANGULATED CORPUS-BASED CRITICAL DISCOURSE ANALYSIS(Saudi Digital Library, 2023-12-01) Alraziza, Abdullah Suliman; Alani, SalmanThis dissertation presents a comprehensive exploration of the intricate relationship between language and identity in Saudi Arabia, with a specific focus on the analysis of emerging and salient sociolinguistic identities as evidenced by data collected from social media sources. Uti- lizing methodological triangulation, which involves creating a corpus and employing corpus linguistics tools, this study systematically collects and analyzes social media data. Specifically, it focuses on hashtag and user-generated content that encapsulates unique identities. The central aim of this research is to advance the comprehension of sub-cultural identity variations within Saudi Arabia and to elucidate the processes by which these identities are shaped through language use on social media platforms. This study makes a significant con- tribution to the field of sociolinguistics, particularly within the relatively constrained sphere of language and identity investigations in Saudi Arabia. Moreover, it provides valuable insights into the evolving Saudi Arabian identity in the context of globalization and modernization, as mirrored in language practices observable on social media platforms. Throughout the course of this dissertation, diverse dimensions of identity have been thor- oughly examined, spotlighting how language utilization on Twitter functions as a portal into the formulation and expression of identities within the Saudi context. The prominence of pro- fessional identity has emerged as a dominant theme, serving as a testament to how individuals present their professional personas within the digital realm. Additionally, this research delves into the intricate interplay between language and identity expression, accentuating the pivotal role of linguistic choices in shaping online identities. The distribution of age groups among users has also yielded valuable insights, shedding light on generational dynamics that influ- ence patterns of engagement. Furthermore, the evolving role of Twitter within Saudi Arabia underscores its burgeoning significance as a platform for both social interaction and the dis- semination of information. The methodological framework employed in this research harmoniously integrates both quantitative and qualitative methods, revealing the synergistic nature of these approaches within the context of identity research. By adopting a critical stance in the discourse anal- ysis, this study has unveiled deeper insights into the mechanisms through which identities are constructed and negotiated. In summation, this dissertation offers a comprehensive investigation into the relationship between language and identity in Saudi Arabia, providing invaluable insights into the evolving sociolinguistic landscape of the nation in the context of globalization and modernization.71 0
