Spatio-temporal Modelling of Irish House Prices
(University of Sheffield, 2024) Algadheb, Maha; Johnson, Jill
Ireland, a prosperous nation in Western Europe, has experienced great instability in its property market in recent years. However, the nature, variance, and causative aspects of the recent increases in housing prices in the Republic of Ireland are poorly understood. Thus, this work uses statistical modelling techniques to define the temporal, geographical, and combination space-time patterns of housing prices in Ireland. Irish house price data have been collected for this study. First, several temporal models were used to analyse trends in Irish house prices, incorporating temporal components, and predictions. Among these models, the SARIMAX model was identified as the best fit, demonstrating the highest goodness of fit for Irish housing prices. The analysis revealed a decline in house prices from 2010 to 2013 but, followed by a steady increase, with some seasonal variations peaking in the third quarter. Second, a variety of geographically weighted regression (GWR) models with different distance kernel functions were applied to capture spatial effects and factors that influence house prices in Ireland. Diagnostic indicators showed that the GWR model with a bi-square kernel function and adaptive bandwidth was the most appropriate for fitting and analysing the spatial variability in house prices. The study demonstrated that the heterogeneity of spatial factors across regions or spatial units can be effectively captured by GWR models. Finally, a combined spatio-temporal modelling approach was investigated, simultaneously capturing temporal and spatial effects. Geographically and temporally weighted regression (GTWR) was used to account for both spatial and temporal correlations and dependencies. The study found that the most effective model for representing the fluctuations in the Irish housing market is the GTWR model, featuring an exponential kernel function and adaptive bandwidth. To evaluate the relative strengths of each approach, the study compared the performance of the temporal (SARIMAX), spatial (GWR), and spatio-temporal (GTWR) models. Although each model provided distinct insights, the comparison showed that the GTWR model performed better overall in capturing fluctuations in the Irish housing market, highlighting the significance of considering both spatial and temporal dimensions simultaneously. This research offers valuable insights for understanding the intricate variations in the Irish housing market. Specifically, it highlights the importance of considering both time trends and regional differences when analysing house prices. The findings could be useful for real estate professionals or anyone interested in understanding the Irish property market.

Assessment of measuring and monitoring safety in healthcare in Ireland and Saudi Arabia
(University of Galway, 2023-08-16) Kaud, Yazeed; O'Connor, Paul; Lydon, Sinéad
In the past two decades, governments worldwide have prioritised the improvement of health care quality and safety as a primary policy goal. However, progress towards achieving this goal has been limited. The provision of poor care and the prevalence of high levels of harm persist in hospitals. Measurement is considered a crucial and essential initial step in the process of improving patient safety. However, while measuring and monitoring patient safety is widely recognised, there is a lack of agreement on how to achieve it. In this thesis, a multi-method approach was taken to address the dimensions in the Measuring and Monitoring Safety (MMS) framework developed by Vincent et al. to provide a structure for understanding how safety is measured and monitored in hospitals in Ireland and Saudi Arabia. Study 1 is a scoping review of patient safety research carried out in the Republic of Ireland (RoI). It examines the extent, range, and nature of patient safety research activities carried out in the RoI; makes recommendations for future research; and considers how these recommendations align with the Health Service Executive’s (HSE) patient safety strategy. Study 2 considers how safety is measured and monitored in Irish hospitals and offers recommendations for how it can be improved. Study 3 is a scoping review that maps the quantity and nature of current patient safety research in Saudi Arabian hospitals, as well as identifies gaps in the existing literature. Finally, study 4 assesses the Saudi Arabian healthcare safety surveillance system in hospitals using the MMS framework. The findings from the four studies conducted in this thesis demonstrate the availability of an adequate amount of safety data, the availability of diverse methods for collecting safety data, and the expertise necessary to improve safety. The challenge is to identify the most efficient methods for generating key and high-quality data that can help multidisciplinary teams in developing effective interventions tailored to specific health contexts.

An examination of the policy and controversy in the greyhound industry in Ireland
(Saudi Digital Library, 2023-08-25) Alsahafi, Amjaad; O'Sullivan, Maureen
This study comprehensively examines the controversial issues surrounding the greyhound racing industry in Ireland. It delves into various industry elements from economic, cultural, and ethical perspectives, drawing on various sources, including media production, financial reports, animal welfare studies, and public opinions. The research examines the industry's institutional structures, financial support mechanisms, breeding practices, animal welfare measures, doping allegations, and export policies. Additionally, it assesses the industry's transparency and accountability, particularly concerning the number of greyhounds bred annually and their fate post-retirement. A key focus of this thesis is the critical assessment of whether the greyhound racing industry should be preserved or abolished, given the complex, multifaceted issues it presents. Ultimately, this impartial exploration of the industry's contentious issues aims to provide valuable insights and informed conclusions that contribute to the ongoing discourse and could guide future policy-making and industry practices.

A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THEATRE-BASED INTERVENTIONS TO ADDRESS BULLYING IN THE UK, IRELAND, AND SAUDI ARABIA
(Saudi Digital Library, 2023-12-01) Alharbi, Naif Ali; Edgar, Stephen
Abstract The current study explored the use and effectiveness of theatre-based interventions to address bullying in the UK, Ireland, and Saudi Arabia. The study adopted a comparative analysis, and data were collected from existing published sources. The data collected were thematically analysed. One crucial finding was that the UK and Ireland have many laws to address bullying, such as the UK’s Equality Act, 2010 and the Irish Children First Act, 2015. However, laws in Saudi Arabia have yet to be fully developed to specifically deal with school-based bullying. Theatre-based interventions, such as role-play and drama, were implemented in the UK and Ireland and were found to be effective in reducing bullying rates among learners. The interventions helped increase students’ knowledge of how to resist bullies and develop better social skills. The main success of theatre-based interventions involves the active involvement of teachers and students in theatre activities. Additionally, the major challenges affecting theatre-based interventions include teachers’ inadequate knowledge of dramatisation and the temporary nature of the positive impact of theatre-based interventions on student behaviour. A key recommendation from the study is that Saudi Arabia should promote drama workshops in schools to empower students and enable them to address bullying issues.
