The objective of this thesis is to investigate the power system stability enhancement via Multi-Band Power System Stabilizers (MBPSS). Such stabilizers use three working bands to allow adequate settings to take care of very low oscillating phenomena, inter-area and local modes. The problem of MBPSSs design is formulated as an optimization problem with eigenvalue-based objective function as well as time domain-based objective function. The particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is employed to search for optimal settings of MBPSSs. To assess the effectiveness of the proposed MBPSSs, eigenvalue analysis as well as nonlinear time-domain simulations are carried out. The controllers are simulated and tested for different systems under different operating conditions. The results show the superiority of MBPSSs over the conventional PSSs.
