dc.description.abstractA static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) control has been found to enhance the damping of the power system. In this thesis, on-line identification and control of power system with STATCOM is investigated. The parameters of a model of the plant (comprising of power system with STATCOM) to be controlled are identified on-line and the control action is calculated based on the identified parameters. Recursive Least Square (RLS) and Adaptive linear network (ADALINE) are used for on-line identification of the plant model. The control derived is based on a pole-shifting technique employing the predicted plant model. Simulation studies for the proposed on-line control are carried out for both single machine and multimachine power systems. The results showed rapid convergence of the estimated plant parameters with an extremely good damping profile. The designed on-line controller has been tested for ranges of operating conditions andfor various disturbances.
