Abstract

Saudi Arabia is developing its nuclear energy program as part of its transformational vision, Saudi Vision 2030. However, there is minimal research that discusses the nuclear aspects and options concerning Saudi Arabia. Moreover, the literature lacks research about the public acceptance of nuclear energy in Saudi Arabia. The public acceptance of nuclear energy in Saudi Arabia aims to enrich the academic discussions, especially that new variables and demographics are introduced. Additionally, minimal studies in the literature provide a mapping of the Saudi Arabia energy outlook and discuss the importance of introducing an integrated energy strategy for sustainable development that considers the economy, environment, and society. The thesis explores strategic options of nuclear energy applications in Saudi Arabia, especially HTR-Desalination, and associated technical and economic evaluation. Following that, an extensive analysis of public acceptance of nuclear energy is performed using Structural Equation Model (SEM) as a statistical tool, with outcomes that bring insights for public policy implications. Alongside that, an analysis of the primary safety aspects of HTR-Desalination is performed with safety regulation consideration for HTR co-generation and co-location. Thereafter, a multidimensional analysis is performed of Saudi Arabia’s energy sector and map the role of nuclear energy and public acceptance in the overall strategy, in addition, discussing the applicability of the research and possible policy implications. Optimally, this thesis aims to provide insights that can contribute to theoretical and practical implications.
