Abstract

The short-term operational planning for multiple energy carrier hybrid AC/DC microgrids is proposed in this work. The presented hybrid microgrid consists of AC and DC parts and they are linked together by leveraging inverters. The hybrid electrical network is also interconnected with the natural gas network which made a multiple-energy carries hybrid AC/DC microgrid. The microgrid includes a photovoltaic power generation unit, wind turbine, battery storage unit, and gas-fired microturbine where they are in a different location within the network. A problem formulation and solution methodology for the network, consisting of AC and DC electricity operating constraints as well as natural gas network constraints are proposed. Mixed-integer linear programming algorithms are utilized to minimize the operation cost of the microgrid, the natural gas supply costs, the battery degradation costs, and the value of lost load. Different case studies are referenced and discussed for normal operating conditions, as well as investigation of the impact of the bidirectional AC/DC inverter capacity, and capacity congestions within the natural gas pipeline.
