Abstract

This work aims to carry out a theoretical investigation to the problem of heat transfer from an isothermally heated horizontal cylinder rotating in quiescent fluid of infinite extent. The study is based on the solution of the conservation equations of mass, momentum and energy for the two dimensional flow of a Boussinesq fluid. The effect of the various parameters which influence the heat transfer process, namely, the Reynolds number and Grashof number are considered while the Prandtl number is held constant. The investigation is carried out for different values of Reynolds number while the Grashof number is varied in the range 0 Gr/Re 1.5, the Prandtl number Pr = 0.7 is held at a constant value. The highest value of the Reynolds number considered in the present study is 840. Streamline and isotherm patterns are obtained from the mathematical model and the results are compared with previous experimental data. A satisfactory agreement was found.
