Microcomputed tomography analysis of the primary dentition

Abstract

Micro-CT enabled precise investigation of dental tissues. The results obtained in this study offer a quantitative assessment of the crown of primary teeth. Overall, all primary teeth have thinner tooth structure on the incisal/occlusal surface, with the exception of maxillary central and lateral incisors. In maxillary and mandibular molars, second molars have thicker tooth structure than first molars. These findings enhance our understanding of the morphological characteristics of the crown of primary teeth. They provide practical information to precisely plan the depth and direction of cuts according to the proximity of the dental pulp and surrounding enamel when performing cavity preparation.
