Abstract
The seismic behavior of structures and the permeability characteristics of different soil types are two important factors that influence the stability of structures. This thesis investigates these two factors in detail, focusing on understanding the interplay between them.
Chapter 1 presents a comprehensive analysis of a model structure subjected to seismic loading using a shake table experiment. The main objectives are to investigate the behavior of the model structure, determine its natural frequency and damping through data analysis, compare its response to simulated and real earthquakes using recorded data and computer simulations, and evaluate the accuracy of the shake table experiment as a method for studying seismic behavior. This chapter provides valuable insights into the dynamic response and performance of structures under seismic loading conditions.
Chapter 2 focuses on the permeability characteristics of gravel and clean sand using the constant head test. The main objectives are to measure the permeability of these soil types, compare the findings to empirical methods for permeability estimation, and assess how well a novel biomediated and abiotic colloidal silica grouting process affects the permeability of clean sands. The research presented in this chapter advances knowledge of soil permeability and prospective geotechnical engineering applications.
This research offers a thorough understanding of the seismic behavior of structures and the permeability traits of various soil types. It does this by merging the ideas from both chapters. The findings have implications for seismic design standards and geotechnical engineering techniques as well as the design and analysis of structures in seismically active areas.
