Are scleral contact lenses comfortable enough for keratoconus patients?

Abstract
Purpose: To systematically evaluate the available literature on the level of comfort and satisfaction when using Scleral contact lens to fit keratoconus patients.
Methods: Randomized control trial, retrospective case series and case report that used scleral contact lenses to asses the level of comfort in keratoconus patient. All articles were researched using the search engine “PubMed’’. Eligibility of all the researched articles were assessed strictly following an inclusion and exclusion criteria. The relevant articles were critically appraised, and the results were analyzed relative to level of comfort and satisfaction of scleral contact lenses on keratoconus eyes.
Results: The review included six studies: 1 of them was a randomized controlled trial, 1 was a case-report study and 4 were retrospective studies. The articles that were selected involved using scleral contact lenses as the main source to evaluate the level of comfort for a population with keratoconus.
Conclusions: The overall findings indicated that scleral contact lenses are comfortable, meet meeting satisfactory levels for keratoconus patients.
