Description
1.1 Research background
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, a prominent member of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), stands as a global powerhouse in the petrochemical industry. Dominated by petroleum, Saudi Arabia's economy is the largest among the GCC countries, with the nation being one of the top three petroleum producers globally. This industry significantly contributes to the country's GDP, accounting for approximately 87%
of budget revenues, 42% of the gross domestic product (GDP), and a staggering 90% of export earnings[1]. Such dominance in the global trade landscape
underscores the petrochemical industry's role as a cornerstone of Saudi Arabia's economy. However, with the ever-evolving global market demands, increasing
competition, and intricate regulatory complexities, there arises an undeniable need for efficient management practices to sustain and enhance this dominance[2]. In this context, the concept of Total Quality Management (TQM) has garnered significant international attention. Renowned thinkers have even dubbed the current era as "the age of quality," emphasizing TQM as a pivotal pillar of the modern management model. This model is designed to adapt and respond to both international and local changes, with the global community viewing TQM as an essential facet of organizational management. Indeed, TQM is poised to be the next significant challenge that organizations, especially those in the petrochemical sector, will grapple with in the coming decades[3]. Saudi Arabia's economic landscape is also witnessing a transformative phase. The nation is ardently working towards reducing its oil dependence, diversifying its income sources, and bolstering its competitiveness. This transformation is a part of Saudi Arabia's ambitious Vision 2030 journey, with the current year
marking a significant midpoint. Recent reviews, such as those by the IMF, highlight the nation's progress, especially in non-oil growth sectors. Despite challenges like oil production cuts, non-oil growth remains robust, driven by The Impact of Total Quality Management Practice on the Operational Performance of Saudi Arabian Petrochemical Firms12 strong domestic demand and strategic reforms[4]. In the midst of these economic and industrial shifts, Quality Management Systems (QMS) have emerged as catalysts urging organizations to adapt and evolve. Organizations are increasingly recognizing the intrinsic value of QMS, hoping that its mechanisms – encompassing tools, practices, procedures, and processes – will equip them to navigate and overcome contemporary challenges. One such challenge that stands out is sustainable development, which intertwines with the principles of quality management[5]. Delving deeper into the roots of the challenges faced by oil-rich countries, it becomes evident that the complexity of export diversification is a significant concern. This complexity stems from the need to strike a balance between the abundance of oil resources and the evolving expectations of consumers[6]. Quality management, particularly TQM, has risen to prominence as a pivotal factor influencing consumer purchasing decisions, moving away from the traditional
focus on price [7]. In the petrochemical sector, TQM is instrumental in elevating product quality and fostering robust stakeholder relationships[8]. Specifically, in the Saudi Arabian context, TQM's influence is pervasive, impacting every facet of petrochemical operations, from product quality enhancement to meeting the sophisticated demands of customers [9]. However, despite the evident significance of TQM in this sector, there remains a noticeable gap in research exploring its application and implications within the Saudi Arabian petrochemical landscape. The unique cultural, economic, and industrial nuances of Saudi Arabia necessitate a tailored exploration of how TQM practices impact operational performance, a quest that this study embarks upon. This thesis is dedicated to examining the influence of Total Quality Management (TQM) practices on the operational performance of Saudi Arabian petrochemical firms, taking into account the unique cultural, economic, and industrial characteristics of the region. By conducting an in-depth analysis of the various factors that affect the operational performance of these firms, with a special emphasis on the role of TQM, this study aims to fill existing gaps in the literature and provide valuable insights and practical recommendations for organizations that are seeking to thrive in the competitive landscape of the 21st century. Through comprehensive research and analysis, the thesis will shed light on the complexities of the petrochemical industry in Saudi Arabia and how TQM practices can contribute to improved operational performance.
