Item Restricted Quality of Healthcare For Patients with Diabties in Primary Healthcare Centers: Evidence from Saudi Arabia(Saudi Digital Library, 2026) Alsubahi, Nizar; Wim, Groot; Milena, PavlovaSUMMARY Quality is a central aim of modern health systems, especially when it comes to managing chronic conditions like diabetes. Enhancing healthcare quality involves more than just clinical effectiveness and safety; it also requires understanding patients’ experiences, outcomes, and perceptions of their care. This broader view of quality emphasizes the importance of involving patient perspectives in quality assessment and improvement efforts. This dissertation focuses on healthcare quality from a patient perspective, focusing on patient-centered care (PCC) among patients with diabetes. Diabetes is a significant public health issue, especially in Saudi Arabia, where it increasingly strains the healthcare system. Managing diabetes demands ongoing, coordinated, and patient-focused care, particularly in primary healthcare settings, which are the first point of contact in healthcare. In recent years, value-based healthcare (VBHC) has emerged as a guiding framework that aligns healthcare delivery with the outcomes most important to patients while promoting the efficient use of resources. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 has prioritized enhancing healthcare quality and promoting VBHC as essential goals in its national healthcare transformation plan. Although PCC and outcome measurement, such as satisfaction, experiences, and outcomes, are acknowledged as crucial parts of these reforms, their practical application at the system and provider levels is in its early stages. There is still no clear and standardized implementation pathway across healthcare settings. Thus, efforts to evaluate healthcare quality and patient outcomes in Saudi Arabia have typically been fragmented, with differences across organizations and care settings. Consequently, the roadmaps guiding the shift to PCC are still in progress and are being piloted and tested across various countries and healthcare systems. To inform Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and healthcare transformation reforms, the central aim of this dissertation is to examine healthcare quality from the patients’ perspective, focusing on PCC and patient-reported measures among patients with diabetes in Saudi Arabia. This dissertation offers empirical insights into the use of PCC, patient-reported experience measures (PREMs), patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), and patient satisfaction in evaluating healthcare quality and supporting value-based care. It explores the links among these patient-reported constructs, highlights the care aspects most important to patients, and examines how sociodemographic factors influence patients’ experiences, outcomes, and satisfaction.10 0Item Restricted Biomedical and Public Health Studies on Susceptibility to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder(Saudi Digital Library, 2023-05) Al Jowf, Ghazi Ibrahim Abdurahman; Rutten, BartTraumatic stress exposure can induce the development of mental disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), resulting in a decreased quality of life and increased disease burden. This thesis investigated and addressed the gaps of knowledge in the understanding of the association between epigenetic mechanisms, gene activity, and differential susceptibility to PTSD. It also identified the public health measures that can be effectuated for the prevention of PTSD and how biomarkers may support these measures. Accordingly, it discusses the possible ways that can aid in the early identification and detection of PTSD resulting from traumatic stress, and the possibility of developing biomarkers of increased susceptibility. It also discusses how this early detection can help with early intervention, and if early enough, prevention. Application of such models, with findings from future research to establish cost-effective measures, can greatly enhance the patient’s quality of life and decrease the disease burden.19 0
