Developing Sustainability Framework for Decision-making in Road Maintenance
(University of Birmingham, 2024-08) Algethami, Fahad; Torbaghan, Mehran
This study develops a sustainability framework for decision-making in road maintenance, which addresses the needs for road infrastructure that promotes long-term resilience, using sustainability factors of economic, environmental, social, technical, and institutional. The usual practice for road maintenance often prioritize short-term solutions, which affects road quality. Therefore, to avoid these problems, the study developed a framework that provides a structured approach used for the evaluation and prioritization of road maintenance options, that aligns with sustainability goals of the United Nations. The study adopts both primary and secondary method for data collection, with the identification of key factors and indicators that support sustainable decision-making. Various models were identified, including Highway Development and Management (HDM-4), a powerful tool for decision-making in road maintenance. The framework was then validated through expert interviews, applied in Jeddah city, as the selected case study. Two prominent roads, King Abdulaziz Road (KAAR) and Prince Majid Road (PMR) were used for the demonstration. In addition, Multi Criteria Analysis (MCA) was used, as it enables to weigh and prioritize different factors and indicators, serving as a guide to sustainable maintenance decisions. The results show that PMR having higher weighted score than KAAR, emerges as the road with more sustainable options for decision-making, meant to achieve sustainability in road maintenance. The developed framework therefore will be helpful to asset managers, engineers, road authorities and decision-makers, which will guide them to choosing the best method or alternative for sustainable road maintenance.

IMPACT ON TOURIST DECISION MAKING IN SAUDI ARABIAN By: Nuwayyir Albalawi Supervisor: Jillian Rickly
(University of Nottingham, 2024-07-12) Albalawi, Nuwayyir; Jillian, Rickly
In the twenty-first century, social media has a growing presence and importance, in particular social media marketing and its impact on tourism. Saudi Arabia has a young and growing tourism sector and needs to discover the best way to attract young tourists interested in the historic and cultural aspects of the country, and to overcome any false perceptions or views regarding the culture and society within the country. Purpose of Research: to discover whether cultural tourism has the same drivers and is impacted by social media marketing in the same way as other forms of tourism. This will enable the tourism sector of Saudi Arabia to ensure that the focus of their social media marketing meets the necessary criteria and is focused on the correct demographic. Methodology: the research consists of a survey of those who have reacted positively to social media marketing posts related to cultural tourism in Saudi Arabia and who are aged 20 to 40 years old. The quantitative data collected has been analysed statistically, including ANOVA and correlations. Findings: the findings of the research indicate that, although this research was conducted on a small scale, it does appear that cultural tourism is no different to other forms of tourism when considered as a subject of social media marketing. Honesty, integrity, and reality appear to be the main influences on potential tourists viewing social media marketing posts. Conclusion: the Saudi Arabian tourist industry is urged to undertake further research, but to ensure that all social media marketing content, particularly where it is paid for content, is honest and reliable, since this does appear to be the most important factor for influencing opinion and changing perceptions.

Exploring AI Technologies In project Management: The Rise of Automated Leadership
(Saudi Digital Library, 2023-09-04) Alshamrani, Abdullah; Pagano, Rosane
The paper examines the changing environment of project management in the age of fast technological breakthroughs, focusing on the revolutionary impact of AI technology and robotic leadership. The study is driven by the urgent need to comprehend the integration of AI in project management practises and its consequences for decision-making, resource allocation, risk assessment, and overall project success. The research builds on a thorough analysis of the existing literature on automated leadership, artificial intelligence, and project management. In light of this, the study's five primary goals are as follows: assess the current level of AI adoption in project management; examine the effect of AI- enabled decision-making on project outcomes; look into the efficacy of automated resource allocation; investigate the role of AI in project risk assessment; and make suggestions for the incorporation of automated leadership. The study takes a quantitative approach, collecting data using well-designed questionnaires and analysing it statistically with the help of SPSS. To investigate the connections between AI and automated leadership, we performed evaluations of reliability, correlation, and regression. The results prove that AI technologies are crucial for project management. Affirming H1, we find that "Use of Artificial intelligence" greatly affects "Project success in project management." The research shows that AI technologies have progressed from simple aids to essential resources for contemporary project management. In contrast, the nuanced view presented by Hypothesis 2, which suggests the impact of "Automated leadership," becomes clear. There is a delicate balance between human-guided leadership and computerised directions, and although automated leadership plays a part, its influence is very limited. The third hypothesis, that "Use of Artificial intelligence" is strongly correlated with "Automated leadership," is supported by statistically significant evidence from the correlation study. It exemplifies how AI technology and automated leadership in project management are complementary rather than competitive. The ramifications go far and wide, touching on the work of professionals, politicians, educators, and researchers to promote ethical AI adoption and lifelong education in the ever- changing field of project management.

Cybersecurity Risk Management Investment: An Empirical Study on Impact Factors Affecting Decision-making in SMEs
    (2023-07-01) Alahmari, Abdulmajeed; Duncan, Robert
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have always attracted cyber attackers as one of the most reachable targets. However, during and after the Covid-19 pandemic, most enterprises accelerated the adoption of new technologies like remote work tools and cloud computing to cope with sudden national lockdowns and the Covid-19 restrictions like social distancing. SMEs’ vulnerability has increased dramatically because these technologies have relied on the internet. This made them more vulnerable to cyber-attacks than ever; and the SME sector was already in a critical situation regarding cybersecurity risk management (CRiM). Disregarding the importance of CRiM by decision-makers has become a phenomenon that few studies have investigated. Previous cybersecurity studies have shown a lack of interest in CRiM, particularly in terms of SMEs' strategic investment perspective. Therefore, this research has attempted to illustrate the crucial role of CRiM in the SME sector by conducting three scientific studies. First, a comprehensive literature review has been conducted, using NVivo software to analyse 25 out of 83 articles according to bibliographical information, research design, and findings. As a result, the review identified 5 major perspectives that play a key role in SMEs’ cybersecurity risk management, which are threats, behaviours, practices, awareness, and decision-making. Then, a qualitative exploratory approach was applied in the second study by conducting several interviews with decision-makers in the sector to understand this issue. The results revealed 8 encouragement factors that play a major role in encouraging SMEs’ decision-makers to invest in CRiM as a strategic priority. Therefore, the present study developed a novel model to classify these factors in three different contexts, which are technological; organisational; and environmental. Thereafter, an empirical study has been conducted to examine the relationship between these independent factors and their effects on encouraging CRiM investment decisions among SMEs. Moreover, the present research contributes to the knowledge by providing evidence that CRiM investment has become a strategic priority that should be urgently considered by SMEs’ decision-makers.
