Saudi Arabia 2034 World Cup: analysis of the supply chain management, coordination and legacy changllenges
(Middlesex University London, 2024) Bakhsh, Ghazl; Kornilaki, Marianna
The Saudi Arabian government's choice to organize the 2034 World Cup represents a gigantic leap forward, both for the political and cultural life of the country. Placing the event within the framework of worldwide sports diplomacy emphasizes the effect of the event that transcends only sport (Ettinger, 2023). Nevertheless, this is much more than just a complicated process; rather, it is an endeavour, which is carried out in front of several difficulties, especially logistics, coordination and legacy planning (Sugden and Tomlinson, 2020). The logistics issue that needs the most attention is the fact that holding such a big event within the Saudi context itself creates some severe difficulties. From the transport infrastructures to the accommodation facilities is an area that needs to be addressed to ensure that the tournament runs smoothly and provides sportsmen and spectators a seamless event (Olivereau, 2022). Consequently, the coordination among general governmental agencies, sports federations, enterprises and international organizations is another big challenge that is faced. Getting unity and harmony among these mixed entities is the main task of the organization behind the successful World Cup (Burton and Naraine, 2023). Additionally, after the short-term issues, are the long-term repercussions also known as the legacy of the World Cup. This concept covers economic, social, and cultural levels, with each level having its specific consequences. In-depth insights and analysis of these repercussions are necessary for policymakers, urban planners and society at large to make strategic decisions that benefit both the positive and the negative effects. The complexities and challenges highlighted above underscore the need for a focused study on Saudi Arabia’s unique position in hosting the 2034 World Cup

Data Analytics in Major Sports Organizations and its Impact on Operations and Decision-Making
(University of Liverpool, 2024-09) Alqahtani, Amjad; Mchale, Ian
Contemporary sports organisations have incorporated data analytics into their operations in order to increase competitive advantage and improve outcomes. However, research on the use of data analytics in sports has been largely theory-focused, so this study wanted to address this gap by exploring three sports organisations: Manchester United Football Club, the New York Knicks and the England and Wales Cricket Board. Specifically, the goal of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore how the listed organisations employ data analysis in areas of performance management, training programmes, strategic and operational processes, and fan engagement and community building. The organisational learning theory was used to underpin this analysis. Results revealed uneven use and effectiveness across both the three organisations and selected areas. Although Manchester United Football Club and the New York Knicks have publicly committed to data analysis use, their success in most areas is very limited. The England and Wales Cricket Board has been the most effective in terms of translating data into strategic, sustainable competitiveness. So far, fan engagement and community building seem to be the main areas benefiting from data analysis, while success in others is hampered by the lack of comprehensive approaches to transforming data into meaningful action.

A Winning Formula: Saudi Arabia’s Sport Strategy, Sport Investment, Sport Industry and Perceptions of its Involvement in the Global Sport’s Sector
(Loughborough University, 2023-12-04) Basheer, Abdulaziz; Skinner, James
In recent years, the investment and development of sports within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has seen a remarkable uptick in intensity, focus, and urgency. A country at the heart of the Gulf, Arab, and Islamic world, the Kingdom has also entered the global sports market with its full weight. Ever since the government released the 2020 Quality of Life Program, the attention the sport sector has received has been unrivalled internationally in terms of government involvement and support. The Ministry of Sport in Saudi Arabia has been investing into the sport sector by providing billion-dollar investments into the multiple sporting federations within the kingdom, athlete support and development programs, athletics events such as the Arab and Saudi games. Football in the Kingdom is also very popular among the population and The Saudi Pro League has also seen billion-dollar investments and unparalleled support signing the world’s best players form Cristiano Ronaldo, Benzema, to Neymar. Reports suggest that the Saudi Pro League also known as ROSHN Saudi League (RSL) has received a budget of over $17 billon dollar up until 2030 to achieve its goal of becoming one of the top 5 leagues in the world. The Ministry of Sport has also been hosting many sporting events including Motorsports such as Formula 1 with the Jeddah Grand Prix, The Dakkar Rally, Diriyah Formula E Grand Prix, and Extreme E. Sporting events include boxing mega events as well with the nation hosting global boxing superstar such as Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury, Jake Paul among others. The Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia has also recently acquired the PGA giving it control over Golf Internationally, is in talks with ATP over a possible investment takeover, and also owns 5 Football clubs including Newcastle United a Premier League club, Al-Nassr, Al-Hilal, Al-Ahli, and Al-Ittihad with plans of buying even more clubs in Europe. The PIF also own SRJ Sports Investments an investment arm tasked with developing IP rights, sport fan experiences, and Sport Broadcasting in the Gulf and North Africa region and have also invested in the Pro Fighters League (PFL) the UFC’s most important direct competitor. However, the academic research on Saudi Arabia’s sports investments, sport industry and involvement in global sports, is relatively limited perhaps because it is a recent phenomenon. Limited studies exist on the motivations and strategies driving Saudi Arabia's increased investment in sport both locally and internationally, hindering a comprehensive understanding of their goals and potential outcomes. Additionally, there is a notable gap in research studying the intersection of sports and investments. The impact of these investments on national development, including socioeconomic benefits, job creation, infrastructure improvements, public health promotion, and 6 international relations are evident yet remain largely unexamined. Additionally, the influence of global perceptions on Saudi’s investment and aim to be a key international player in global sport has not been thoroughly explored. Further research is needed to address these gaps.

Understandings and Experiences of Sports, Physical Activity and Related Digital Campaigning Among Saudi Young Women in Saudi Arabia
(Saudi Digital Library, 2023-12-06) Almohammadi, Nuha; Vicari, Stefania; Weiner, Kate
This thesis explores the way social media sports campaigning contributes to Saudi women’s understandings of physical activity and sports in relation to gender norms in Saudi Arabia. It also investigates how these campaigns are received by Saudi women who are exposed to these activist messages. Through eight focus group discussions with 32 female university students at King Abdul-Aziz University, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, this study explores the participants’ understandings and experiences of physical activity and sports. It also examines their views about digital campaigning. Furthermore, through 11 semi-structured interviews that used the scroll-back method, this study explores the participants’ personal experiences of social media use and of different forms of digital sports campaigns in relation to femininity and dress codes. The study identifies the role of place, Islam, traditions and society’s beliefs, family influence and structural issues, and the intersections of these issues in relation to Saudi women’s understandings and experiences of physical activity and sports. It suggests that the way in which Saudi young women understand physical activity and sports is not entirely dictated by these issues; rather they are exerting their agency in ways that enable them to counter or negotiate these influences. The study also shows how digital sports campaigning is significant for Saudi women at a personal and individual level. In particular, social media influencers, celebrities, and sportswomen seem to be critically important in contributing to the understanding of femininity and dress codes. The study overall is contributing to scholarship on intersectional feminism, particularly in the Saudi Arabian context. It illuminates the way intersectionality works in shaping experiences and understandings of digital campaigning in Saudi Arabia.
