Lexical Ideological Manipulations in Translation: George Orwell’s Animal Farm in Arabic
(Swansea University, 2024-05-06) Alhazmi, Bashaier; Cheesman, Tom; El-Awa, Salwa; Davies, Lloyd; Lopez-Terra, Federico
Investigating ideological manipulations is a continuing concern within the field of translation study. Owing to the fact that George Orwell’s novel Animal Farm has been growing in popularity among Arab readers since the advent of the so-called Arab Spring, this project aims to explore the ideological manipulations and interventions in the translations of Orwell’s novel Animal Farm into Arabic in the context of different political periods. It aims to determine the extent to which political conflicts in the target culture affect the translator’s lexical choices. Moreover, it explores the translators’ personal ideological manipulations in the target texts (TTs). Also, it aims to identify the strategies adopted by translators that led to ideological manipulations. The study uses three translations of Animal Farm into Arabic by three different translators and publishers. The translators and publishers are from Egypt, which was one of the countries that was affected by events of the Arab Spring. One translation was published in 2008, slightly before the advent of the Arab spring and the other two translations were published several years before that in 1997 and 1951. Through adopting the framework of Critical Discourse Analysis, the study aims to investigate at a lexical level the ideological shifts that occurred in the translations and how these shifts resulted in a manipulation of the target text. It goes further to investigate how these shifts are related to the political context of the target culture and of the translators. Lastly, it will explore the strategies used by translators that resulted in ideological manipulation. Far too little attention has been paid to investigating ideology in the translation of political novels into Arabic. In most cases, recent investigators have examined the ideology in political speeches and discourses. This study will contribute to other studies concerned with ideology in translating political novels.

The Impact of American Public Opinion on the Increase of Legislation Against Saudi Arabia
(Saudi Digital Library, 2023-11-30) Aljurbua, Faris; Sudulich, Laura
Many academic researchers have discussed the impact of public opinion on policies in the United States, including the positions that members of Congress may take on some issues of interest to voters. The impact of public opinion may lead to formulating a legislation with negative political connotations, such as sanctions or threatening to use these sanctions towards countries with strategic and historical ties to the United States. This matter has become worth studying to understand to determine why members of Congress take negative legislations toward some countries more than others. One of the countries facing this type of legislation is the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which enjoys historical and strategic relations with the United States. However, these ties did not prevent many members of Congress from taking negative legislations towards Saudi Arabia more than most of its neighbouring countries. Saudi Arabia is one of the few countries that does not have a good reputation among American citizens. In this paper, we look at the relationship between the negative view of American citizens towards Saudi Arabia and the increase of legislation against it in Congress, examining how the impact of American public opinion leading to legislative policies enacted toward a vital country like Saudi. To better understand the relationship between the negative view of American citizens towards Saudi Arabia and the rise of legislation against it in Congress, we compared Saudi Arabia and Egypt, which share many political, cultural, and social similarities. I monitored how American citizens viewed Saudi Arabia and Egypt from 2001 to 2022 and compared this to the legislation issued against the two countries from the 107th to the 117th congressional terms. These results showed that there is a relationship between American citizens’ unfavourable view of Saudi Arabia and the rise in legislation against it.

A Long Annotated Translation of An Ancient Egyptian Book of The Dead: The Papyrus of Sobekmose by Paul F. O’Rourke
(Saudi Digital Library, 2023-11-23) Alghanmi, Mohammed; Elgindy, Ahmed
This MA long annotated translation project delves into the profound realm of ancient Egyptian funerary traditions and religious beliefs through the translation of "An Ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead: The Papyrus of Sobekmose" by Paul F. O’Rourke. The objective is to provide readers with a nuanced and culturally resonant insight into the Egyptian conception of the afterlife. The chosen text, with its intricate blend of religious doctrines and funerary rituals, offers a unique window into the spiritual fabric of ancient Egyptian society. The translation process involves meticulous consideration of cultural nuances, linguistic intricacies, and the preservation of the text's inherent spiritual depth. Special attention is given to rendering terms related to the Egyptian pantheon, such as Osiris, Nephthys, and Isis, in a manner that captures both their linguistic essence and cultural significance. The exploration of the Ba, Ka, Ren, Akh, and other components of the soul within Egyptian mythology further enriches the reader's understanding of the intricate interplay between life and the afterlife. By employing translation strategies that balance linguistic accuracy with cultural sensitivity, this long annotated translation aims to transport readers into the heart of ancient Egyptian beliefs. The resulting translated text not only unveils the subtleties of religious practices but also contributes to a broader scholarly understanding of ancient Egyptian civilization and its profound insights into the mysteries of existence and beyond.

A Critical Comparative Study of the Investment Law in Saudi Arabia and Egypt
(Saudi Digital Library, 2023-11-21) Ramadhan, Lojin; Florou, Aikaterini
In the backdrop of evolving global markets, states have increasingly focused on enhancing their foreign investment climate to attract new business prospects and foster economic growth. Over the years, Egypt and Saudi Arabia have demonstrated their strong commitment to economic diversification and willingness to reform their investment regime to meet international investors' growing expectations and requirements. This research paper offers a comprehensive comparative analysis of the investment frameworks in Saudi Arabia and Egypt. In doing so, the research highlights the historical evolution of the investment regimes within these two countries. A crucial aspect of this investigation is the examination of the compatibility of Sharia law with contemporary business requirements. As it will be shown, both states have adeptly navigated the integration of Sharia law into modern legal structures and have devised effective, fair, and transparent legal systems. Furthermore, the research explores Saudi and Egyptian efforts to create favourable investment opportunities. It will be shown that Egypt is more liberal and open to investors than Saudi Arabia. However, Saudi Arabia has been able to codify its investment framework better and provide investors with full information about investment opportunities and incentives openly and transparently. The findings of this study contribute to a broader understanding of effective strategies for attracting foreign investment and providing practical guidance for states seeking to revitalise their investment regimes in line with contemporary economic dynamics.
