The Norms of Poetry Translation from English into Arabic: A Descriptive Corpus-based Study of Shakespeare's Sonnets

Abstract

The Thesis discusses the norms of translating Shakespeare's sonnets from English into Arabic. Mainly, it considers the cultural transmission of these sonnets from the English Elizabethan culture to the modern Arabic culture. 'Modern' comes here to enhance the concept of (distinction) in translation since every translator tries to prove that his translation is better than the previous one as the study highlights. Five translations are the data of discussion, and each of them is considered a representative of its time and area. The major cultural discussion is about the religious symbols and taboo.
