Abstract

Background: The postpartum period represents a significant life transition for women, characterized by substantial physical and emotional changes that have implications for their sexual experiences. Despite a growing body of research in this area, there is a need for a consolidated understanding of women's perspectives and experiences with postpartum sexual relationships, particularly following natural childbirth. Aim: This qualitative systematic review aims to illuminate the multifaceted experiences, challenges, and perceptions of women concerning their sexual relationships after experiencing natural childbirth. Methods: An interpretative qualitative systematic review was conducted to analyse a variety of studies and themes related to women's postpartum sexual experiences. Results: The review revealed several key themes, including the profound impact of physical and emotional changes post-childbirth on sexual relationships, the central role of effective communication in shaping these postpartum experiences, and the critical importance of supportive partners in navigating the challenges of postpartum sexual well-being. Conclusion: This comprehensive review provides insights into the intricate and nuanced nature of women's sexual relationships following natural childbirth. The findings underscore the necessity for holistic support and understanding from partners, healthcare professionals, and society to promote women's well-being during this pivotal phase of their lives.
