Abstract
This study investigates the multifaceted impact of creative tourism on local communities in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with a focus on socio-economic outcomes, cultural preservation, and community participation. Framed within the principles of Creative Tourism, Community-Based Tourism (CBT), and Sustainable Tourism Development (STD), the research examines the alignment of creative tourism with local cultural practices and values, its potential economic benefits, and its influence on social cohesion and cultural preservation. Employing a mixed-methods approach, data were collected through surveys of Riyadh residents and interviews with stakeholders.
Key findings reveal weak or statistically insignificant correlations between community participation and economic benefits, as well as cultural preservation. Similarly, the alignment of tourism activities with local culture did not emerge as a significant factor in determining the success of creative tourism initiatives. The study identifies marginal support for the role of community involvement in shaping positive social outcomes, but these effects are limited by centralized decision-making structures. Moreover, while the quality of creative tourism experiences was hypothesized to influence tourist satisfaction and repeat visits, no significant relationships were identified.
The findings underscore the need for genuine community involvement, balanced integration of cultural elements, and a broader strategic approach to enhance the effectiveness of creative tourism. Practical recommendations include fostering inclusive governance models, improving infrastructure and service quality, and prioritizing cultural authenticity in tourism offerings. This study provides critical insights for policymakers and stakeholders aiming to leverage creative tourism as a tool for sustainable development under Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 framework. Future research should consider a more diverse demographic sample and explore long-term impacts to further inform creative tourism planning.
