Abstract

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) represent a significant public health concern globally and in the GCC region, contribute substantially to mortality and disability. This research aims to shed light on the economic implications of NCDs in the GCC area, considering both health-related impact and other consequences affecting the economy and healthcare quality. The study investigates the high prevalence of NCDs in the GCC, hindrances to healthcare service development, and explores strategies to enhance healthcare for NCD patients. Using secondary data collection and a non-systematic literature review focused on GCC countries from 2012 to 2023, the research reveals that primary healthcare facilities in the region are insufficient, with an average of 1.4 facilities per 10,000 population. Obesity is a prevalent NCD type in the GCC, particularly in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, with rates steadily increasing over time, contributing to challenges in the healthcare system and economic burden. The estimated economic burden of NCDs on the GCC economy is approximately US$50 billion. The study identifies shortcomings in monitoring and evaluating healthcare initiatives, alongside a lack of health expenditure and healthcare worker statistics, hindering the improvement of healthcare services. To address these challenges, the research suggests comprehensive investigations, adoption of successful practices from other regions, and fostering collaborations among GCC nations, international organisations, research institutions, and healthcare providers. Evidence-based approaches and novel tactics are proposed to effectively tackle the economic burden of NCDs and enhance healthcare services in the GCC. In conclusion, this research addresses the economic implications of NCDs in the GCC and proposes strategies to improve healthcare services and tackle the associated challenges. However, there is a lack in current information regarding the prevalence of NCDs and financial expenditure in certain GCC countries, which merits further exploration, calling for further statistical research to promote healthcare services in the Gulf region.
