What are the causes of Yemeni conflict and what factors have contributed to the failure of key players in resolving the problem?

Abstract

The aim of this research was to delve into the root causes of the conflict of Yemen and identify the key external players within this conflict who enabled the situation further. The study was an exploratory research study that employed the systematic review research design in order to gain relevant research material regarding the Yemeni conflict. The systematic review design, employed with a set of controls, provided a total of 15 articles, out of which 5 were shortlisted as most relevant to the research question at hand. The 5 shortlisted articles were analysed for common themes and relevance and showed that the Yemeni conflict can be said to be caused by three major factors; the political policies of President Saleh before the Arab Spring events, the exclusionary tactics played out by Saleh’s supporters even after his departure, and the longstanding conflict that already existed between the North and South sides of Yemen before the 1990 unification.
