Abstract

The aim of this dissertation was to delineate the bioactive metabolites of Alternaria and to review their properties to determine the viability of Alternaria as a commercial biopesticide. A comprehensive search was undertaken on three databases – PubMed, Embase and AcademicSearch. The PICO framework was used to derive search terms and several search term limiters were leveraged to generate a productive result. Six studies were included for the final full-text review. The review identified six host plants - Gingko biloba, Hydrastis canadensis L., Hypericum perforatum, Morinda officinalis, Perlagonium sidoides and Azadirachta indica A. Juss from which Alternaria was isolated from as an endophyte. About forty secondary metabolites were found from the literature review. These secondary metabolites have been shown to have various bioactive properties, ranging from α-glucosidase inhibition to the disruption of bacterial carbohydrate metabolism.
