Abstract

The coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has caused a global disruption causing many countries and cities to close borders and impose lockdowns to stop the spread of the virus. Face masks along with other protective equipment and hygiene awareness all contribute in reducing the spread of the virus. Global shortage of face masks has led many governments and health organisations to find other face mask alternatives for N95 respirators and surgical face masks. As a result, many governments, researchers and individuals are searching for other reusable and sustainable alternatives. The analysis of the literature has helped to understand the different approaches for developing alternative solutions and all the elements necessary for face masks to function. This research, after obtaining a good understanding of face masks, aims to develop a strategic framework to provide an efficient and reusable face mask. The design of the face mask is created for 3D printing, complemented with a parametric design feature for a high seal tailored-fit face mask. As well as selecting a durable and sustainable material to ensure the reuse and the high efficiency of the 3D printed face mask. Moreover, analysing cotton fabric properties to act as a filter barrier for the face mask. Finally, producing a functional prototype to test and validate the framework and the selected materials.
