Abstract

Background Infertility is characterised as the inability to conceive after one year of unprotected sexual intercourse. Despite advancements in assisted reproductive technology (ART), which can potentially facilitate pregnancy for those experiencing difficulties, many individuals continue to struggle with conception. Infertility is often perceived as a significant stressor and a life-altering crisis for both individuals and couples, leading to a diminished quality of life. These individuals encounter a variety of challenges. Consequently, understanding the effects of delayed conception and the process of seeking fertility care becomes crucial. Methodology A systematic search strategy was formulated, and five databases were searched for relevant articles, including CINAHL, Medline, PsycINFO, EMBASE, and MIDIRS. Each paper identified by the search underwent a quality assessment using a JBI tool. Relevant information to the research question was extracted, and the major themes were then identified by thematic analysis. Aim The primary aim of this review is to explore the effect of infertility treatment on the quality of life experienced by couples living with infertility. Findings Eight studies were included in this review. Recognised the effect of infertility and ART on couples' quality of life. were categorised into four main themes related to: Sociodemographic factors affecting couples' well-being (i); the psychological well-being of couples (ii); social and spousal support (iii); and coping and relationship dynamics (iv). Conclusions The review offers valuable insights into the challenges faced by couples' well-being throughout their infertility journey and treatment. It emphasises the necessity for targeted educational interventions and policy adjustments to provide comprehensive support to partners during treatment, thereby ensuring high-quality care. Further research is needed to gain a deeper understanding of these factors and identify any additional determinants that may affect the quality of life of infertile couples.
