Abstract

Heritage tourism is growing around the world as it makes people to visit, spend more money which is vital for the country’s economic driver and sustainable business. Saudi Arabia is focusing on its culture and heritage tourism and considered as an essential part of its both social and economic development. In Saudi Vision 2030, heritage tourism plays key part and promote as well as develop its heritage tourism. However, each sector has its unique problems and challenges which must be addressed before making strategies to meet objectives and reduce the risk of failures. This study aim was to explore the importance of heritage sites in country’s economic and social development and enhance the identity of Saudi society. Also, evaluate the key challenges and barriers faced by Saudi Arabia in the development of heritage sites. For this purpose, qualitative (i.e. semi-structured interviews) and quantitative (i.e. survey questionnaire) research approaches were utilized for data collection and particular focused Ad-Dirriyah heritage site in the Kingdom. The research revealed that cultural and heritage tourism have enormous benefits both social and economic such as job creations, increase business activities, preserve historic bonds with culture and tradition, create soft image of the country, improve quality infrastructure, and environmental benefits. The challenges and barriers include new pandemic (i.e. covid-19), shortages of skills, inadequate media campaign, lack of resources, and lack of senior management support. The study concluded that Saudi government should considered following major strategies which includes promote local community development; improve skills and management approach through providing training and education; develop special websites for heritage tourism; offer short-term and long-term loans for business with flexible conditions and provide free consultations on improving businesses. The main limitations and future work are outlined as conduct separate survey questionnaire from both workers at heritage site and tourists, include more heritage sites in study, and wider the target population.
