The science and applied methods in order to facilitate tissue generation have been grown exponentially during the past few years including tissue regeneration in the dental field. The focus for this work is to replace lost interdental tissue, as a consequence of periodontal disease, following extraction of teeth or rarely congenital absence Over the past 50 years biomaterials have been used to replace dental tissue; initially metal implants were used then polymers and more recently synthetic materials. There are considerable merits in using a non-functional tissue harvested from elsewhere in the body; indeed, inert material are no longer considered acceptable as most have been shown to result as foreign body or allergic reactions (Abou Neel, Chrzanowski, Salih, Kim, & Knowles, 2014). In summary, patients with loss of interdental papillae experience dental aesthetic concern. The primary research aim of this systematic review is to identify which tissue regenerative techniques are the most satisfactory in restoring the interdental tissues. The studies that have met the inclusion criteria for this systematic review were plagued with a small sample size and the follow-up periods were short. However, these studies although deficient may offer approaches for robust further investigation. In order to advance the field of interdental reconstruction, 1) the link between underlying alveolar bone and interdental papilla should be decoupled, 2) novel strategies in order to reconstruct soft tissues, such as tissue engineering, should be developed in the laboratory and, 3) trialled on subjects recruiting accurate measurement tools.
