Abstract

Fibre Bragg grating (FBG) sensors have attracted interest for strain measurement applications across various fields due to their unique capabilities. This dissertation investigates the use of FBGs as strain sensors through experimental characterization and sensitivity analysis. The reflection spectrum of an FBG was analyzed using both a tunable laser (TL) and broadband semiconductor optical amplifier light source. The FBG exhibited a narrow reflection bandwidth of 0.22 𝑛𝑚 and peak reflectivity at 1549.64 𝑛𝑚 when using a tunable laser. For strain sensitivity evaluation, the FBG was subjected to increasing tensile loads by precision translation stages. Overall, this research confirms the feasibility of using FBGs as fibre optic strain sensors.
