Abstract
Abstract
Objective: This study analysed the causes and risk factors, impacts on daily life, medical care, and the role of antenatal education and support via the perceptions and experiences of patients who had suffered severe perineal tears during labour.
Methodology: This research conducted semi-structured interviews with a study population (n=3) consisting of women diagnosed with severe perineal tears. The narratives were thematically analysed to ascertain the key themes and any emergent sub-themes.
Results: This study identified five primary themes: causes and risk factors, post-delivery complications and symptoms, impact on daily life, medical care, and information and support. The study participants identified three primary causes of severe perineal tears: induction and the duration of labour, insufficient instructions received during contractions, and inappropriate birthing position. Additionally, the participants reported significant physical post-tear complications including haemorrhaging, pain caused by sutures, and incontinence. Emotionally, the participants reported feelings of anxiety and psychological distress following delivery. Although the participants had positive perceptions regarding surgical procedure and physical therapy, they identified deficiencies in antenatal education and support during labour.
Conclusion: The results of this study emphasise the need for wide-ranging antenatal education concerning perineal massage techniques and PFMT, alongside counselling to provide effective post-tear psychological support. Additionally, improved outcomes can be achieved by fully engaging patients in the health management regarding labour positioning and by providing well-defined procedures for pushing.
Future research, consisting of large sample populations and extended follow-ups, is fundamental to the development of successful interventions and support plans for patients with severe perineal tears.
