The aim of this project was to reduce friction and wear at constant velocity joints by evaluating the performance of two different provided greases and gaining the ability to select the best lubrication for every specific condition.
This project studies the tribological behavior of different greases used in constant velocity joints (CVJ). The focus of this project is reducing friction and wear at CVJs, by testing different greases at different conditions. A TE77 tribometer was used to simulate the operation conditions of CVJs and evaluate the greases efficiency. Different temperatures and pressures were applied to lithium-based grease (Grease B) and polyurea based grease (Grease F). The performance of these two greases was evaluated by comparing the coefficient of friction and wear volume of the metal, when these greases are used. Experimental results met the theoretical research and show that both greases had optimal performance at normal operating temperatures, but both greases degrade at very low and very high temperatures. In general, grease F performed better than grease B in most conditions. These results suggest using grease F for high temperature and pressure applications, while grease B is better for normal operating conditions because of the cost efficiency and availability of grease B. This project provides a better understanding of the effect of lubricant on the performance of CVJ systems in terms of friction and wear. It highlights the significance of selecting the best grease for each specific operational condition, to increase the performance and lifespan of CVJs. The conclusions of this study have practical consequences for the automotive industry, particularly in the optimization of lubrication strategies for CVJ systems.
