dc.description.abstractThis project reviews current development in the context of hydropower technologies. Archimedes screw turbine (AST) is one of the renewable hydropower plants which is environmentally friendly, operates flexibly and with low cost. This project’s site is River Kelvin located in Glasgow, Scotland. According to the site’s characteristics, AST has been determined to generate power in this project. Also, a special attention is paid to the implementation of a small-scale AST (run-of-river system). Recent research results concerning this technology are also discussed, particularly installation, operation and efficiency. Weight is given to the related technical, environmental and economic impacts. Advances in AST installation and design are also introduced; its potential role to generate energy within the current operating conditions is further highlighted. This report offers a thorough analysis of the flow influence on the River Kelvin, also specifications of AST are further outlined. This includes investment costs of facility, equipment, connection, and other construction works. To verify the validity of this project’s analysis, the determined costs are based on established correlations and compared with other implemented projects. The established correlation for cost can be reasonably utilised for future cost estimates of such project developments.
