Effectiveness of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Compared to Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy When Treating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder; Systematic review

Abstract

TF-CBT and EMDR are the most treatment have been used for PTSD in children who experienced a traumatic event in their life. The purpose of this paper is to find which treatment is more effective, especially for children from 4 to 18 of age who experienced sexual abuse. In this systematic review examined 14 RCT papers using key terms and subheads for post-traumatic stress disorder, Truman Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing in four databased which are (PsycARTICLES, PsycBOOKS, PsycINFO, and PubMed). Selected papers were evaluated by using the guide of the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) (Panchal and Damodaran, 2017), and the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool (RoB) (Higgins et al., 2011). T The objective of this study was to find an effective treatment to reduce the symptoms of PTSD/PTSS in children who had sexual trauma and any other traumatic events by using EMDR or TF-CBT. The conclusion, TF-CBT, and EMDR had the same effect of reducing the symptoms of PTSD/PTSS. However, EMDR and TF-CBT showed the effectiveness of reducing the signs compared to Child Centered therapy, waiting list control, non-directive supportive therapy and trauma as usual.
