Abstract

Furniture market is one of the biggest sectors in many countries. It is a competitive market that requires effort and creativity to attract potential customers. There are a variety of factors influencing the customer decision to purchase furniture, including visual appeal, price, quality and comfort. However, few writers have been able to draw on any systematic research into the effects of colour and design on furniture sales. This dissertation aims to investigate the impact of design and colour on the furniture product sale rates rising the question of “Does furniture colour and design have an impact on sale rates and customer decision?”. Therefore, the main objectives are to assess the current trends in furniture colours, to identify the factors attracting more customers, to explore the impacts of the brand name on the sale rates, and to provide recommendations for designers and customers to improve their standards toward furniture design. These objectives are approached by different research methods, including literature review, survey, and interviews. The study findings show that the most popular furniture designs are modern styles with bright colours, preferably white. Besides, the study also identifies the main factors affecting customers decision which are the comfort, colour, design, quality, and price. Unexpectedly, the brand identity is not the priority for customers as they choose comfort and visual appeal over the brand name. The outcomes of this research provide suggestions for furniture makers and customers as. The recommendations include using colour theories and colour wheel schemes in making and purchasing a furniture piece. The findings also recommend considering the emotional effect of interior colours and their impact on individual mood for a better experience.
