Causes and Effects of Delays on Infrastructure Construction Projects in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA)
Abstract
Construction projects are critical for the development of any country since they allow for the alleviation of living conditions as well as ease of movement. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been experiencing numerous setbacks as a result of delays in the completion of various construction projects across the country and subsequently undermining its growth. This project sought to determine the reasons behind the delays, their impacts, and the measures which have been taken towards their resolution by the KSA government. The researcher employed a triangulation approach consisting of surveys and interviews in the collection of data from managers in various projects. In this case, answers from the survey and interviews enabled the researcher to develop a conclusive perspective regarding the causes and impacts of construction delays in KSA. The study established that the major causes of construction delays include, the lack of finances, poor communication, and inadequately skilled workforce and delayed decision making. In addition to that, the study determined the major effects of construction delays as being cost overrun, time overrun, disputes, and inconveniences to the public. The study provides a wide array of information regarding the running of construction projects in KSA. In line with the challenges associated with the implementation of construction projects, the research recommends the creation of the necessary funds to finance projects. In addition to that, the research recommends the easing of visa regulations to allow skilled workers to move into the country.
