Developing an Internet of Things (IoT) Framework for Testing Home Consumer Devices
Abstract
This project aims to test the vulnerabilities of smart home hubs by developing a comprehensive home IoT testing
framework. The framework proposed is based on OWASP’s IoT attack surfaces areas and have been extended to be
applicable on home IoT and specifically devices home hubs. The application of the framework has been demonstrated
on the SmartThings hub, an off-the-shelf home IoT device by testing it for vulnerabilities. By following the
framework, the results of the experiment have illustrated the security measures SmartThings have placed on their
hub. It stood resilient against the penetration testing applied to it and showed that an IoT device can provide security
alongside functionality. Therefore, providing the IoT security testing framework is going to facilitate the testing of
other smart home hubs and home IoT devices and will address the security concerns that are associated with them in
an efficient way.
