Abstract

This report explores the Unit Commitment (UC) problem within the power system domain. The focus is on optimizing power generator operations to achieve cost-effectiveness while meeting demand requirements. The report delves into the challenges posed by uncertainties in energy demand and renewable energy sources (RES) and explores how stochastic optimization techniques can address these uncertainties. The primary objective function is outlined, encompassing the start-up and operational costs of generators. The formulation considers various variables, including binary generator start-up decisions, generator power output, and demand satisfaction. The integration of RES with conventional generation units is highlighted as a solution for environmental concerns, and the complexities introduced by RES uncertainties are explored. The section concludes with a comprehensive review of key terms and concepts discussed in the report. Additionally, the information broadens its scope by incorporating the consideration of unscheduled maintenance and sensitivity analysis as significant dimensions, adding depth to the study's investigation.
