The aim of this research is to evaluate the sufficiency of current sustainability schemes in health-oriented housing developments. The research objectives include the investigation of existing housing planning instruments in the UK. Followed by an evaluation of the leading green building schemes, LEED and BREAM. This dual analysis will assist in identifying Key Healthy Housing Indicators. A multiple case study approach will be implemented to critically analyze the case studies effectiveness in the provision of health-oriented residential housing. The main dissertation findings answer the following research question: How effectively do existing sustainability schemes support the development of health-oriented residential housing in the UK? The resulting hypothesis is that existing green building schemes are still not effective enough to fully uphold sufficient health-oriented residential housing principles. Based on the findings a set of recommendations to promote revisions of policies and contribute to planning for health-oriented residential housing are formulated.
