Nowadays, because of the inefficiency as well as limited supply of energy together with continually increasing fuel costs, investigations into renewable energy sources are becoming ever more important. In this dissertation, the photovoltaic (PV) systems will be investigated. As the converters are played an important part of the PV systems, in this dissertation, a comparison will be made between a Conventional Boost Converter (CBC) and an Interleaved Boost Converter (IBC) for Photovoltaic (PV) systems. This will involve using the Perturb and Observe (P&O) method in conjunction with a Maximum Power Point Tracker (MPPT) algorithm. Using MATLAB/Simulink the converters simulating will be achieved after which the results will be analysed. Firstly, the PV system is investigated and modelled in conjunction with the MPPT. In addition, the MPPT is used to extract the maximum power of the PV system. Moreover, the boost converter is a switch mode DC–DC converter in which the output voltage is greater than the input voltage. Different traditional converters like boost converters deviate within the method they tolerate high transient current and physical phenomenon losses because the change of frequency is varied. As well as this, ripple occurs in DC–DC converters due to the switching transients. In order to solve the drawbacks mentioned above, the two-phase interleaved boost converter is employed. The conventional boost converter and interleaved boost converter are modelled, simulated, and the results compared in order to meet the dissertation’s main objective.
