The Foreign States’ Role in The Syrian Civil War 2011-2020
Abstract
Even though many aspects are involved in the civil war in Syria such as the internally prompted violence which can be connected to the 2011 conflict, this dissertation intends to explore the facet of the involvement of the foreign states in the war in Syria. The objectives of the study were accomplished using a method of qualitative content analysis and founded on the understanding of the events following 9/11. This dissertation examines data connected to the Syrian conflict using the realism perspective, so as to understand the predominant geopolitical changes spurred by the events of 9/11. Its focus is on the major countries of the Middle East, particularly Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Turkey and the role they play. It also looks at the interventions of other global players not located in the Middle East, the US and Russia. The dissertation brings to the front the facts beneath the involvement of the foreign powers in the conflict so as to locate the complications involved in the Syrian civil war. Finally, despite the challenges faced by the United Nations efforts in the Syrian conflict, the study has provided some solutions bringing forward the need for the international community to collaborate ending the impasse.
