Abstract
This dissertation investigates the rehabilitation of urban heritage in Dra'Al-Khatm
village within Ad Dair Governorate, Jazan Province, Saudi Arabia, emphasizing the
revival of heritage villages as essential cultural, social, and economic resources. Urban
heritage, defined by its tangible elements and historical depth, plays a pivotal role in
representing civilizations and defining cultural identity. Despite its value, urban heritage
in Saudi Arabia faces threats from modernization and neglect, leading to the deterioration
of historical sites and villages. This study focuses on Dra'Al-Khatm village, a site of
significant historical and architectural value, yet currently in a state of deterioration.
The research adopts an integrated methodology that combines inductive,
descriptive, and comparative approaches, the study delves into local and international
heritage management practices to develop a nuanced understanding of effective
rehabilitation strategies, employing case studies methodology to explore sustainable
rehabilitation strategies that integrate community participation, economic revitalization, and preservation of architectural integrity. The dissertation draws upon both local and
global practices in heritage management, aiming to apply these insights to not only
Dra'Al-Khatm but also similar contexts within the region. By doing so, it seeks to
contribute to the broader field of heritage conservation and urban planning, offering a
model for balancing heritage preservation with contemporary development.
The findings indicate that effective heritage conservation, when integrated with
sustainable tourism and community participation, can significantly contribute to both
cultural preservation and economic energy. The rehabilitation of Dra'Al-Khatm has the
potential to serve as a model for similar heritage villages by indicating how revitalized
historical sites can act as catalysts for broader regional development. The dissertation
proposes practical and scalable solutions that align with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030
objectives, emphasizing heritage-led growth, sustainability, and community
empowerment.
