Abstract Performance appraisal has been widely acknowledged as having a direct impact on motivation, productivity and development of employees. This study was undertaken to understand how performance appraisal is perceived among teachers of higher educational institutions within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. As the case institute, the Najran University was selected. Teachers of these educational institutions, irrespective of subject taught, were included as participants of this study. A qualitative questionnaire was developed and circulated among teachers who have spent a defined minimum time period at the University. Responses received were analysed thematically to identify trends. Results reveal that performance is consider vital by the younger generation of teachers while among the senior group see it as a continuous path of self-development. Younger groups feel strongly about performance appraisal which lacks among seniors. But both feel that implementation needs to be precise if performance appraisal has to be effective. Though there is overall a positive perception about appraisal among teachers of the University, they point out that flaws do exist which needs to be addressed. Strengthening appraisal and feedback communication also needs attention
