Abstract

The main objective of this thesis is to develop a model that simulates the performance of an air breathing fuel cell under Saudi Arabia’s ambient conditions. The aim of the investigation is to enhance the overall fuel cell performance for the assessed geographical location. To achieve this objective, the following procedures were adhered: • Highlight the current materials and fabrication methods used in the production of PEMFC • Examine the energy outlook in Saudi Arabia and the current state of renewable energy sources which can contribute to improving the hydrogen economy in the country • Examine the economic and environment the introduction of PEMFC in the transportation and electricity generation sectors and compare the economic and environmental aspects with business-as-usual scenarios • Analyse the performance of PEMFC stack under ambient conditions in Saudi Arabia via a validated CFD model, and examine the viability of humidification • Investigate the PEMFC performance for different bipolar plate materials through a validated CFD model
