Abstract

Project Aim: The aim of this study is to examine the impact of the COVID-19 virus pandemic on the sleep quality of bodybuilders in Saudi Arabia. Methods: Quantitative data from 34 bodybuilders living in Saudi Arabia were gathered utilising two survey questionnaires, one asking about prior to the pandemic and the second, during the pandemic. Both were comprised of the same questions. Data analysis was performed using paired sample t-tests and chi-square tests. Research Approach: Within the context of primary quantitative research, a deductive approach has been used for the study. This has facilitated data collection, using a questionnaire, from a wide range of participants. Findings: The pandemic has negatively affected the sleep quality of bodybuilders in Saudi Arabia. This cohort has experienced an increased number of sleeping issues and more disturbed sleep during the pandemic, which has affected their physical and mental well-being. The participants also experienced low morale and pain in their bodies owing to sleep deprivation. Significance: Since sleep is an essential part of humans’ physiology, bodybuilders require good quality sleep following a heavy workout. The study also provides additional information pertaining to the sleeping issues and the side effects of poor sleep quality encountered by bodybuilders during the COVID-19 pandemic. Keywords: COVID-19, health, pandemic, sleep pattern, sleep quality.
