Abstract
This dissertation critically explores the epistemological and methodological frameworks guiding the study of major development interventions, specifically the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh and the Progresa-Oportunidades program in Mexico. Through a comprehensive analysis of existing literature, including Millán et al. (2019), the research underscores the strengths and weaknesses inherent in the epistemic frameworks used to analyse data. While empirical studies, such as those by Barber and Gertler (2008), offer rigorous data-driven insights, they often overlook intricate cultural and systemic dynamics. Conversely, qualitative reviews provide depth but may lack empirical robustness. The work highlights potential biases in studies, such as a potential Eurocentric lens, emphasising the importance of recognising macro-level factors like global geopolitics. Ultimately, the study advocates for methodological pluralism, suggesting an integrated approach as pivotal for understanding and improving poverty alleviation programs.
