Abstract
Technology is changing industries at an increasingly rapid pace, and the aviation industry is no exception in this regard. Managing the safety and security of millions of people and tremendous amounts of cargo every day is not an easy task for airports, which are critical centers in international transportation networks. Despite their limited use so far, artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are gradually changing and replacing traditional security measures. This dissertation delves into the effectiveness of applying the artificial intelligence (AI) applications to enhance airport security systems in Saudi Arabia, a country that has taken the lead in implementing innovative approaches to enhance and develop its aviation infrastructure.
Applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in airport security are diverse and they have several uses such as threat detection, luggage screening, behavior analysis, facial recognition, and many other things. The main purpose of such creative applications is to decrease human error, improve the efficiency and accuracy of security procedures, and also to enhance the smoothness of the traveler experience which, in turn, may improve the flow of tourists to the kingdom. However, the use of AI applications will also raise significant questions about ethics, privacy, and the potential replacement of human labor which may have several concerns in the Saudi society.
This study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in improving safety and security at Saudi Arabian airports. It investigates the theoretical foundations of AI technologies, such as machine learning and neural networks, and their application in predictive analytics for detecting security threats. The study evaluates the real-world deployment of AI systems, focusing on their role in monitoring passenger flows, identifying security risks, and improving the screening process. It also assesses the impact of AI on operational efficiency and passenger wait times, while addressing privacy and data protection concerns. Through case studies and empirical evidence, the research demonstrates the effectiveness of AI in airport security and explores passenger perceptions of these measures. The dissertation aims to offer practical recommendations for implementing AI in airport security, highlighting best practices and ethical considerations for other airports to improve safety and efficiency.
